A Note from the Judges:
We were thrilled to have been afforded the opportunity to view and judge the beauty that was captured in each of these 378 photographs. We would like to complement the creativity and the effort that each of the the performers and photographers exhibited.
It took us eight rounds of narrowing down the field, with heated discussion about the merits of each photograph. In the end, we kept to the theme, and evaluated each photograph on its innovative portrayal of fire. We were also quite interested in the gestalt meaning of the picture, the quality of the composition, and the overall artistic merit. Although we all had favorites that didn't make it into the top tier, our eventual decisions were based on consensus.
Aside from the judging criteria, some of the pictures that we enjoyed the most included the ones with levity. Its easy as fire performers to take ourselves too seriously, and the brief respites of humor made our judging much easier. A special thank you to those performers and photographers.
About the photographs:
(in order, for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photographs)
#1
This picture represents the playfulness and fascination that we have all experienced when encountering fire. The flame in this photo connects us with the otherworldliness of this being, just as it connects us to our other selves when we perform with fire. We could write pages about the intricacies of this picture.
#2
Corporate America gone wild. The duality of this picture represents what lies just beneath the surface in each one of us. The colors and subject matter, although discordant, balance the composition, in the fashion of Yin and Yang.
#3
This composition exhibits the strength and grace that is at the core of all that we strive for in fire performance.

A Behind the Scenes Look at:
La Escuela Del Sol
Looking to blend that perfect vacation getaway with fire?
Look no further than La Escuela Del Sol, located in the beautiful and tranquil city of Montezuma, Costa Rica. La Escuela Del Sol offers a wide variety of 1 to 4 week programs to enhance your stay there, including Fire Poi Lessons, Surfing, Yoga as well as a college level accredited Immersion Spanish course.
Founded on the principle of self enhancement for the mind, body and soul, La Escuela Del Sol offers the Fire Community a very unique experience: an educational vacation in a tropical paradise setting. Although catering more to the beginner and intermediate poi student, workshops in advanced poi and other fire tools are offered throughout the year. Some of the lessons you will learn during your stay include variations of the weave, the butterfly, buzz saw, thread the needle, stalls, behind the back weaves, transitions and turns, wraps, isolations, fountains, the gremlin, mind meltdowns, the straight jacket and more.
Aside from the schools in-house programs, you can also enjoy local excursions such as waterfall hikes, night time giant turtle egg laying tours, zip line canopy tours, horseback riding, scuba diving, or rent an ATV and discover some of the more secluded beaches on your way to Cabo Blanco or Mal Pais. And don’t forget to check out the local wildlife sanctuary where you can play with monkeys, ant eaters, kinkajous, porcupines and other exotic animals.
Founder and Director Jeremy Levine started La Escuela Del Sol in June of 2007. “Nothing has brought me more joy than La Escuela Del Sol. The school is a personal passion, one I strive to make better every day.”
