Fire Staves are long cylinders typically made out of aluminum or wood with Kevlar wicks wrapped around both ends. Similar in use to baton twirling, staves are a common tool for the beginner to professional fire dancer who spins the staff creating a variety of beautiful circular patterns of light.
Whether you’re looking for a staff to do fast-spinning tricks, or contact combat moves, we have what you’re looking for. Our fire staves are made from anodized 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum tubing 1/16" wall thickness.
Each staff comes with wood plugs in each end for optimal weight, strength, and safety. For people who use their staves for body contact and prefer the weight balance shifted to the outside ends, we offer 3 oz. (86 g) steel plugs for the 5 and 6ft staves and 2 oz. (57 g) for 4 ft staves on each end. This slows down the rotation of the staff, making balancing easier. (Note: The steel Plugs are inside the staff for your protecton, and you will not be visable.)
The 4’ (1220mm) staves are 3/4" diameter (19mm) and the 5’ (1525mm) and the 6’ (1830mm) staves are 1” (25mm) in diameter. Center foam grips provide comfort and stability along with helping absorb moisture for less slippage. We offer single, double and triple wicks depending on staff length.
These staves are very durable and we commonly use them for staged fire combat. Keep in mind that full battle strength hits will put some dents and possibly bends in the staff affecting the balance. While we do not recommend full strength hits for fire performances, if you choose to do this, we recommend using a separate dedicated staff for this purpose.
To measure the correct length staff for your height, choose a staff that comes up to your nose, but this is by no means a rule. Many people will use the shorter staves as doubles (one in each hand), while other performers like the dramatic effect of spinning a large staff. Just remember that a larger staff gives you bigger fire and a smaller staff makes for quicker moves. If you are new to staffing, err on the side of a shorter staff with smaller wicks.
Each of our wicks use a 4 ft (1220mm) length of 1/16” (3mm) thick and 3" (75mm) wide Kevlar. We specify length per wick, not per staff. Choose between 2" (50mm) and 3" (75mm) wide wicks.
The weight of the staves are as follows:
4' with 2" single wicks - .94 lb (.43 kg)
4' with 3" single wicks - 1.04 lb (.47 kg)
5' with 3" single wicks - 1.54 lb (.70 kg)
5' with 3" double wicks - 1.88 lb (.85 kg)
5' with 2" double wicks - 1.78 lb (.81 kg)
5' with 2" triple wicks - 1.88 lb (.85 kg)
6' with 2" double wicks - 2.04 lb (.93 kg)
6' with 2" triple wicks - 2.14 lb (.97 kg)
6' with 3" double wicks - 2.14 lb (.97 kg)
6' with 3" triple wicks - 2.42 lb (1.10 kg)
